Giving Back to God

Why do we give?

Everyone knows that when you see the offering plates in church, it's time to break out the wallet. But churches pass around those plates for more reasons than what you might think. When you give to the church, it's NOT because the church needs money or because the pastor needs to be paid - it's because God gave first. Everything we have - the things we own, our abilities, the air we breath, the earth we live on, our very lives - it all comes from God. What other response can we have to that kind of generosity but to be generous back to God? We do this by giving tithes, gifts, and offerings to the church to give back to God some of what He has generously outpoured on us.

Tithing

Tithing is giving a tenth of your income to God. This comes right from the Bible, in Leviticus 27:30, “A tenth of the produce of the land, whether grain or fruit, is the Lord’s, and is holy.” More than that, we tithe because it is a good way of reminding ourselves that God needs to come first. No, it's not easy, but it definitely pays off! Putting our dependency on God rather than the money we make from our jobs refocuses our life and opens our eyes to the blessings God gives us, which should make us want to bless God through our tithe.

Offering

You might be wondering, is there a difference between tithes and offerings? Yup - there's a big difference! An offering is something that you give beyond your tithe. Remember that a tithe is 10% of your income, so anything beyond that is an offering. Typically, offerings are for special projects that the church is doing or special missions the church is supporting. But you don't have to wait for that. You can bless God simply by giving joyfully and generously.

Gifts

Surely a gift is the same thing as an offering, right? Actually, a gift is a special kind of giving in and of itself. We give gifts to God as extra thanks for seeing us through special moments of our lives. This might include the birth of a child, a graduation, a wedding, a death, or any moment in your life which is significant and which God has seen you through.
